Those of us who have actually been mandated to do double- and triple-duty as the local fishwrap's IT person (along with whatever we were actually hired for before they figured out we "did computers" as well) are getting a good laugh from this one. Straight from the BOFH files. :D

Those of you who recognize yourself in this missive, please stop ruining your IT guy's day.

All of you who post while working are directed to read and reread #3 very closely.

I was the de facto IT person at a prior stop and found that one whole section of the building had disabled their virus protection because they found it annoying. Then they blamed me that it took so long to fix.

No, but they were all over 50 and didn't really "get" computers.

At my old shop, I could e-mail the IT guy a dozen times when I had a problem, but the only way to get it fixed was by hunting him down and escorting him to my desk.

A few years ago at my office, our IT guy (actual, real IT guy) never even installed virus protection on an entire department's computers. We got hit with a virus and it was quickly discovered what a slacker he was. They still kept him on. He eventually quit with very little notice.

Whenever I see one of these, and it happens at least four times a year, I wonder if IT guys realize what absolute fucking losers they come off looking like.

It's like the wrestling fans on the other thread who are trying to convince people they aren't fanboys while at the same time describing years-old matches with signature moves and behind the scenes plots.

I was the IT person at my last place --mostly because everyone there were absolute idiots. They could barely turn their computer on.

My fav was an editor who called me when our internet service was interrupted and said, "JR, the internet is broken. Can you fix it?"

    Honest.
