I'm hearing a buzz that Miami is laying off 50 or so from across the company - anybody knows anything please post or let me know.

    Romenesko put up the memo.

Seven full-timers and two part-timers in the newsroom: An assignment editor, a copy editor, a designer, a position in the library, a photographer, an online editor and two positions in the wireroom. Four open positions won't be filled.

    Also, another week of furloughs.

    49? That's got to hurt a bunch.

Not quite as bad as the 85 (43%) at my joint, but still painful.

Who's got the record for most furlough weeks in a year?

  5. The Miami Herald Media Company has announced 49 staff reductions company-wide through a combination of voluntary buyouts and involuntary layoffs. The jobs will come from across all divisions of the company, according to publisher David Landsberg.

Writers covering the Miami Heat in any way, shape or form need not fret.

Actually, no writers from the seven in the newsroom.

I actually think writers will be the last to go in any layoffs at any papers right now. Copy editors, and photographers are the first targeted.

And have been in virtually every layoff at 1 Herald Plaza. And actually, management might be the last to go at any paper.

It'd be fun to see if a bunch of managers could ever put out a section on their own.
