BAY CITY, MI — A week before his trial was to begin, an Auburn business owner accused of possessing child pornography opted to plead guilty to a felony rather than go before a jury.

Clifford E. Bichel, 37, on Thursday, Feb. 6, appeared in Bay County Circuit Court and pleaded guilty to one count of using the Internet to communicate with another to commit a crime, a 10-year felony. In exchange for his plea, the prosecution agreed to dismiss one count of possession of child sexually abusive material, a four-year felony.

Bichel's trial was to begin Thursday, Feb. 12.

Police in April began investigating the Affordable Gourmet Catering owner when a detective from the New Jersey State Police contacted the Michigan State Police Tri-City Post, stating he discovered an email address registered to Bichel had received at least two videos of child pornography, court records show.
