Is it just me, or does this job seem to be open every six months. This is becoming a regular on the board.

"The Daily Republic, a six-day daily newspaper in Mitchell, S.D., is seeking an energetic sports lover to report, design pages, shoot photos and manage web content as part of our three-member sports staff.

This is a great opportunity for a young journalist, but applicants will be expected to have a college journalism degree and a solid knowledge base. If you're a recent college graduate, we'll be looking for strong experience at your college newspaper. That experience should include lots of writing, and also some page design and photography. If you were heavily involved in the sports section for your college newspaper, or if you have some professional experience in sports journalism and are looking for a new challenge, this could be a great opportunity for you.

The Daily Republic has a print circulation of nearly 12,000 and reaches about 100,000 people monthly at mitchellrepublic.com. The print edition was redesigned this year, and the Sports section is now a color section front for the first time in the paper's 133-year history. Progressive changes such as those have helped The Daily Republic earn the General Excellence Award each of the past three years in its division of the South Dakota Newspaper Assocation's Better Newspapers Contest. We are a growing, evolving media operation, and we want applicants who are willing to work hard and excel."

Sports coverage opportunities include about 35 high schools in our area, one NAIA university in Mitchell, lots of summertime Legion and amateur baseball, an annual professional rodeo, and three local/area natives playing in professional leagues (Mike Miller of the Miami Heat, Chad Greenway of the Minnesota Vikings and Riley Reiff of the Detroit Lions).

To apply, send a cover letter, resume and work samples to Sports Editor Luke Hagen, lhagen@mitchellrepublic.com, and include a copy to Editor Seth Tupper, stupper@mitchellrepublic.com. Only the applicants chosen for interviews will be contacted.

I guess the SE can't be trusted to forward resumes and clips to the editor? It's a first job for most people, and unless you're from the Dakotas, you probably want to get out of there fairly quickly and head back to civilization.

It's actually a pretty civilized area and the people there are very nice along with the athletes and coaches. It's South Dakota, so there is a bit of a talent drop off with Division I athletes.

The reason people want to get out of there is because the Sports Editor is a real piece of work. He drove the last SE out along with the last three reporters there, and his editor stands behind the berating he gives his employees.

OMG, it's 1982 all over again! Next year we plan to get rid of the typewriters and put computers on each reporter's desk.

There is a spot higher in the awards called the sweepstakes, and Mitchell used to say they won that...except they got knocked off the last two years so they can no longer say that.

There is a computer at each person's desk and they are new from what I know, but when they got the computers, it took over three months to get them set up and working.

Who has the Mike Miller beat?

Not sure anymore, but I am guessing the Sports Editor does, but the reporter that was there last summer had it because it was too hard to try and get a hold of Miller, so he didn't want to do it. He was too busy trying to get a hold of Chad Greenway before sending him a nasty e-mail saying how Greenway was being a jerk to him.
