So now, instead of having Congressmen who have to face the electorate, you have Congressmen who have to bargain for the cushy corporate jobs they'll get after their term limits hit.

That was the case Time Magazine made regarding New York City in September, 1990:

By January, 1996, this was their take on NYC:

(This was also the cover that got Bratton fired. Giuliani was under the impression that he would be on the cover, and freaked out when it turned out Bratton was instead. Bratton had a far bigger, and far better press operation that Giuliani. Giuliani gutted his press office, and eventually got rid of him.)

Do you know what percentage of voters can identify their Congressperson by name? It's not high. Hell, leaders like Boehner and Pelosi, who get on TV daily, draw 20-30 percent "don't know" in their polling approval ratings. If we are misgoverned, and I think that's a reasonable assertion, and we are also a representative democracy, then exactly whose fault is it besides our own?
Being a citizen, like any job, requires a certain amount of effort. We give Americans who won't put in the effort a pass. They deserve as much scorn as the typical venal useless politician, because they create those politicians.

That's happening anyway in a lot of cases. You think they're going to willingly give up a cushy House or Senate seat for anything less than retirement or an equally or more cushy job?

It definitely happens now. Term limits will just make it worse.

49% of Americans still won't stop and ask for directions.

And 60 percent of Americans can't agree which direction we're currently traveling (only that it's wrong).

    Fuck 73% of America.

    They're 76% of the problem.

Among that 73%, by the way:

The poll is very limited because it doesn't say why people are dissatisfied. I'm sure that would tell the story much more because you'd find out that, aside from the bottom line agreement on the economy, a larger percentage would blame the economy on one reason, a large percentage for the opposite reason.

Which explains why we remain dissatisfied (stalemate in the face of a crisis).

Obama's numbers are similar. His approval rating is at 43 percent with 51 percent disapproval. But where does the disapproval stem from? It would be folly to think that the 51 percent are all tea partiers. It's fair to say that a chunk of it -- don't know how much, but a substantial chunk -- are people from his base of supporters who are unhappy with what they perceive to be sellouts by him (on the budget showdown, Bush tax cuts, foreign policy issues, etc., etc.).

So yeah, this pole gives you very limited information.
