    "What Would Happen"

Also a hot Meredith Brooks song.

Not that I'm a fan or anything :p

don't know if it was ever popular, but "This time of year" by Better Than Ezra is a favorite of mine.

Everyone needs to have "Tarzan Boy" by Baltimora somewhere in their collection, just for the shock value when it finds you in the shuffle setting.

Damn, good thread with good suggestions. I'll add a few from my iTunes:

    Birthday, Sugarcubes
    Games Without Frontiers, Peter Gabriel
    Rhythm is a Dancer, Snap
Bette Davis Eyes, Kim Carnes (yes, I know it's a 'hit list' type, but I never tire of it)
    No Diggity, Blackstreet
She Gathers Rain or Smashing Young Man, Collective Soul
    Anything, Anything, Dramarama
    Scooby Snacks, Fun Lovin Criminals
    Not an Addict, Kay's Choice
We Are The Normal, Goo Goo Dolls (it's a Paul Westerberg song)
    Angry Johnny, Poe
    Pets, Porno 4 Pyros
Love is on the Way, Saigon Kick
    Molly, Sponge

That New Jack City soundtrack was killer! Some great tunes on that. There's a good Keith Sweat tune on their too. Can't remember the name though.

  7. How about "The Warrior" by Scandal featuring Patty Smythe? There's always "Bye Bye Pride" by The Go-Betweens and "My Favorite Room" by the Lime Spiders.

  8. Ragu's cite of OMD went criminally unpraised.

Good to see some love on here for "This Beat Goes On" by The Kings, a terrific Toronto band who I saw quite a bit around town back in the day.

    Some others:

"And We Danced" and "Day By Day" - Hooters

"The Whole Of The Moon" - Waterboys

"Radio Silence" - Blue Peter (one of the all-time great lost 80s classics)

"Rain In The Summertime" - Alarm

    "Human Cannonball" - Webb Wilder

For the obscure you need to go to the novelty songs of the era.
The Curly Shuffle - Jump n the Saddle band

Take Off - Bob & Doug McKenzie (w/special guest Geddy Lee of Rush)

Shaddup Your Face - Joe Dolce

Fish Heads - Barnes & Barnes

(the song starts about 2:15 into the video)

Pac Man Fever - Buckner & Garcia

    Disco Duck - Rick Dees

and in the spirit of the holidays...
12 Days of Christmas - Bob & Doug McKenzie

For some other pop/rock songs you should check out:
Around the Dial - the Kinks
    Banditos - The Refreshments
Mexico - The Refreshments (a track NSFW)
Fonder & Blonder - The Refreshments
This Time It's For Real - Southside Johnny & the Jukes
Talk to Me - Southside Johnny & the Jukes
(or any song off Best of Southside Johnny & the Jukes)
Lines Around Your Eyes - Lucinda Williams

Belinda Carlisle was mentioned earlier on this thread. I'm partial to her song "Darling Leave the Light On for Me."

    A couple of other faves:

"On Dancing Moon" Dennis DeYoung (lead singer of Styx).

"Total Eclipse of the Heart" Bonnie Tyler (Hugely popular in 80s, but I still love hearing it.)

"I Won't Hold You Back" Toto.
