And no I ain't talking Ed Sullivan here. (Sorry for the dated reference).

Tampa's offering voluntary buyouts to half its employees. Yowch.

    More info on Romenesko.

EDIT: I accidentally posted this in jobs. Can someone move it to Journalism Topics Only?

I've tried to type something like five times now.
I'm so stunned I don't even know what to say.
SF said it best. Simply astounding.

They're offering half, but will they run half out of there if not everyone takes it?

I'm pretty dense when it comes to biz stories -- have they said anywhere what happens if half the employees don't take this offer? Is half really the targeted reduction figure?

Third paragraph, we didn't have to read too far:

If a set number of employees don't accept the buyouts, FCG could explore possible layoffs, Schueler said. No minimum has been determined by Media General, but the cost savings needed "are significant," according to TBO.

I doubt if they run them out, but I bet they hope most of them take the offer.

half a year's salary is not a buyout. it's simply a dab of anal eaze.

Are they going to hire new grads (low-salary) people to take the place of people who are bought out, or just leave those spots vacant? The story didn't say.

Either way, this is a punch in the stomach. I mean, Tampa, FL! A three-pro-sports town, not including the Noles, Gators and USF and they can't do well enough to keep from offering half of their employees buyouts?

    Damn.
