Feel free to PM me with any questions...

The Sun, a 28,000 circulation daily in Yuma, Ariz., has an immediate opening for a sportswriter/designer. In the past, Sun staffers have covered MLB spring training and opening day, as well as the playoffs and World Series. We also staff every NFL home game for both the Chargers and Cardinals and will be at this year’s Super Bowl, as well as every college bowl game played in San Diego and Arizona. Of course, those opportunities are balanced by a heavy dose of coverage for our eight area high schools. Preps are the bread and butter of our five-person staff, and we take them seriously. Yuma is also home to a nationally-competitive junior college that gets a lot of ink, as well as the Yuma Scorpions baseball team of the independent Golden Baseball League. Plans are also in the works for a new 6,000-seat hockey arena that will host a Yuma pro hockey team by the fall of 2008. Layout skills are a must and DTI/Pagespeed experience will get you a key to the city. College grads preferred. The pay is modest, but cost of living in Yuma is excellent. Yuma, a city of over 90,000, is the fastest-growing city in the state and located smack dab between Phoenix and San Diego, on the border of Mexico and California. The Sun is an equal-opportunity employer owned by Freedom Communications, Inc. If interested, go to our website at http://media.yumasun.com/jobs.php to fill out an application. Please send separate a cover letter, 5-10 clips of your best work, and resumé to: Scott Jungman, Sports Editor, 2055 S. Arizona Ave., Yuma, AZ 85364 or to sjungman@yumasun.com.

Either way, it ain't 28. But then, is there a newspaper in the world that doesn't inflate its circulation numbers in job ads?

Circulation actually topped out at a bit over 29,000 this year. There is a migratory element to Yuma's population and circ. tends to drop during the summer months.

It's nice that the paper staffs Cards and Chargers home games; a lot of papers that far from an NFL city wouldn't, so it indicates some desire to do more than the minimum.

As for what that actually accomplishes for the writer, well, you are not exactly on the beat every day, building sources and showing you can break news on a beat, you are just there for the game, and you don't really get to show you can compete with the regular writers.

I hesitate to call the town a hellhole because I suppose some people would consider it paradise if they are tired of being knee-deep in snow. But in the summer it can top out at around 120 degrees, and in the winter you will be surrounded by vast stretches of geezer-filled RV parks. We found the downtown exactly what you'd expect in an Old West ghost town, the only restaurant open on our visit being a place called Lute's Casino, which touts a local delicacy consisting of a hot dog on top of a hamburger.

I think they should have mentioned this hot dog on a hamburger in the ad.

What Frank refers to is the "especial" ..... Places in Yuma also have a cut of beef known as the "tri-tip" ... actually not too bad (the tri-tip, that is)

As for the gig, it's a good one for the 25-and-younger set. You'll pay your dues, and you need to make dadgum sure that you put most of your effort into your high school work, but in 2 years you'll be ready to move up to the APSE 40-100K classification, especially if you can find some good enterprise (it's out there) and/or learn to play well with DTI.

My info is dated, but I'll take questions via PM for those interested....

Tri-tip is a far sight from "not too bad." If made properly, and served with garlic bread, there are few more delicious meals on God's green earth.

Garlic bread? The few times I had it, it came with beans, salsa, slaw and a tortilla....
