    Description:
Wyoming's leading newspaper is looking for a versatile, motivated sports journalist to complete a talented staff.

Few newspapers our size offer the growth opportunities you'll find at the Casper Star-Tribune. Three of our hires in the past four years earned APSE writing awards their first year out of college. Some of our "alumni" have moved on to major college coverage at larger papers, while others have accepted promotions at our paper. Our latest vacancy arises from the promotion of one of our college beat writers to Online Editor. Your job may include a number of possible beats, including University of Wyoming teams, professional indoor football, minor league baseball, and local preps. Casper is host to the College National Finals Rodeo, and you'll pitch in with that week-long effort, as well.

Our statewide circulation of 30,000-plus makes us the most prominent media voice in the Cowboy State. We've owned the Wyoming Press Association's general excellence trophy for the past two years. Our sports section has won 20 APSE awards since 1995, including the ‘Baby Triple Crown’ for 2005 (three honorable mention recognitions in daily, Sunday and special section categories). We're looking for someone to help us build on that excellence.

The job will include reporting and desk duties, depending on the time of year. Quark experience will set you apart from other candidates; full-time sports copy editors are also encouraged to apply.

You'll need a bachelor's degree, excellent verbal skills, a willingness to continuously improve as a writer, page designer and online reporter, and strong attention to detail. Meanwhile, you'll live and play amid Wyoming's outdoor splendor. We're about a four-hour drive north of Denver.

We offer an excellent benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, 401(k) retirement, employee stock purchase plan, paid holidays and vacation. We are an equal opportunity employer. Apply online at http://www.casperstartribune.net/hr/employment. Please include a cover letter explaining why you're the right person for the job, along with your resume, reference list and work samples. Deadline for application is Feb. 12, 2007.

I know this has come up at least a couple times recently. Casper isn't the sexiest burgh out there, but it's not East St. Louis, either.

Hey, it's only a couple hours from Laramie and Fort Collins.

  5. About 15 minutes from Tahoe, isn't it?

Since the ad listed, well, everything, anyone know what this hire can expect to be doing at least most of the time?

From what I've heard, it's a sports GA gig. Some indoor football, preps and maybe some help on Wyoming athletics, though Laramie is a nearly three-hour drive. Also might include some rookie league baseball with the Casper Rockies.

Don't quote me on that, but that's what the last person was doing.

    From someone who works here...

It is a GA gig, but it could turn into a DI beat fairly quick. Of the last three hires, two have taken over DI beats here in less than a year. You prove yourself on indoor football, high schools, Casper Rockies and UW sidebars. You'll design, too.

If you want more info, I can hook you up. PM me.
