MnDOT official fired over improper trips

A rather interesting Strib story about her actions in the aftermath of the disaster.

She probably never did a damn thing in her Homeland Security job and wonders why all the fuss when she away from the grindstone after a real emergency.

    Greatest lead ever:

The Minnesota Department of Transportation emergency response executive who failed to return to the state for 10 days after the Interstate 35W bridge collapsed was fired Friday for taking unauthorized trips, making excessive personal calls on her MnDOT cell phone and bringing embarrassment to the state.

The latest news on construction is they figure it will open in September, not December as originally planned.

New I-35W Bridge May Open Three Months Early

This worries me. Not only are they speeding construction along, they are designing the bridge as they go.

    Not good.

The really bad news? The gas-tax suspension means they'll have to leave a gap in the middle. As long as you're going fast enough, though, you'll be able to vault it.

I don't know, Rosie. I think it's the same as the WTC. How can you make a prediction on something that you've never done before? Remember when they said they removed all the debris from Ground Zero way ahead of schedule? Well, no one ever had to clean up two 100+-floor buildings, how can you definitively say it will take x months?

Clearing debris and building a bridge are two completely different things.

Not the same thing at all.
