The Northwest Florida Daily News, a Freedom Communications-owned paper in Fort Walton Beach, has an immediate opening for an experienced sports writer. We’re a 40,000 circulation paper located between Pensacola and Panama City; about four hours east of New Orleans, five hours from Atlanta. This person will be primarily responsible for coverage of the nationally-ranked Okaloosa-Walton Junior College basketball program; assisting with high school sports coverage and occasional college football coverage; and developing enterprise story packages. Some inside page layout and agate page duties are also involved. We’ll give priority to applicants with a knowledge of the region. Contact sports editor Perry Ballard at perryb@nwfdailynews.com or send resume and work samples to Northwest Florida Daily News, P.O. Box 2949, Fort Walton Beach, FL 32549

    good people there

  3. High quality paper here with excellent prep sports coverage. Had an opportunity to take a position there in late 1990s, but turned it down. Whenever in area, it's a very good read and you can't beat the area. It's awesome, but very pricey.

The google ads say it all about this place. Never a shortage of things to do on your off time.

This is a good gig for someone with experience on a prep beat who wants to make the jump to college coverage. The OWC men's basketball program has put two players in the NBA this decade (Kedrick Brown, Donell Taylor), and the women's program is led by a dynamic former Alabama assistant who will one day have an SEC head coaching position of her own. For the right person, this can be a stepping stone to bigger and better things.

FWB has become an expensive place to live over the last 3-4 years. But the area offers a lot of things that you don't get at a normal 40k operation in terms of quality of life. It's a good opportunity. And Perry Ballard is good people.
