Two more Chicago cops were murdered in the last week.

They have no leads in the one case, but made an arrest in the other. As usual, the killer is someone who should have already been behind bars.

I guess YF missed this story:

Homicides fall in large American cities

Homicides in Chicago have dropped 46% during the last 20 years, from 850 to 458. New York and Los Angeles seen even larger drops in murders.

    Mandatory gun possession is required.

Well of course the murder rate is dropping in Chicago, no one there can apparently aim, except the residents defending their own homes. Hell the thread title is 21 shot 1 dead, no one ever hear of targeting? Shoot to kill damnit. [/bluefont]

Beef isn't too far off. Lots of shootings.

Oscar, do you still live in the area?

It's been one of the deadliest for cops.

And there are parts of this city that are very dangerous.

    From the article:

As I've been saying, most of the crime & homicides occur in a very few neighborhoods and the majority are gang related.

I feel safe where I live, but not everyone feels that way.

And, Chicago's record does not compare to either New York or L.A.

Also, to compare it to 1990 -- the hight of the crack epidemic -- does not mean that good police work is behind the drop or that we can't expect better.

Just another summer weekend in Chicago:

But, don't worry, the local papers are all over it:

The good news for good people of Chicago - the thugs have awful aim. I mean, if my math is correct, between these two weekends there were 60 people shot and only seven dead?

    That is an awful average.

All the major metros are like that. A murder doesn't make the front or even the metro front of the Dallas Morning News unless it's a child or a dog, or it happens in west Plano or Highland Park.

The gangs are bad. The gangs have been bad for 50+ years, though the intensity of the badness waxes and wanes.

It's waxing, now, and the still-shitty economy on the bottom lends itself to sustained festering.
