Is it possible that Cooley saw an opportunity to jump to a school in the same conference before he got pushed out at Providence? As has been pointed out, 12 years at PC and 7 tournaments (probably 8 if you count the COVID year) but only the Sweet 16 last year, when they also won the conference title. Four the last five years not higher than fourth in the standings. He's been.....fine but double-digit losses every year but win, usually between 18-22 wins -- that's happened seven times.

Another year or two of being just kinda meh and do you make a change because the program's reached its limit and Cooley's reading the tea leaves?

Providence was plenty happy with Ed Cooley. Too happy, in a sense - there wasn’t enough NIL money around.

I imagine there’s enough at Georgetown. Maybe. Private schools struggle more than big state schools with this.

It will be the End Of The Road ... and more proof for Georgetown that It's So Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday ...

In addition to the obvious pay raise, isn't it possible that Cooley had taken Providence about as far as anyone could reasonably expect?

In the most Catholic state in the US, Providence has long been kind of a de facto state school for many of Rhode Island's movers and shakers. To the extent there's NIL money there, Providence would make more than its share.
There was a famous/notorious occasion in the late '70s when both Providence and URI (the state school) qualified for the NCAA tournament and the legislature passed a "go get 'em, gang" resolution which named Providence but not URI.

Jeeze Louise if Providence folks were turning up the heat on Cooley they’ve got the brains of a busted parking meter. Rick Pitino isn’t walking through that door, but the next Keno Davis might be.

Same happened with Tim Welsh. They expect coaches to be miracle workers. They were spoiled by Rick Pitino… 40 years ago. It’s fucking Providence College.

Generally, you're right. But sometimes, all it takes is one really, really rich guy. I don't know if Georgetown has that guy, but if he does exist and he really cares, he can make it happen. For the whale, NIL is probably a more compelling use of cash than the unrestricted annual fund gift, which gets parceled around the department. NIL means a chance for one ego to be satisfied unequivocally and in relatively short order.

PC also went to the FF in 1973. Spoiled or not, it does have a pretty solid basketball history.

Come on, anyone who has spent time in both DC and Providence knows that recruiting to one is not remotely similar to recruiting to another. Gtown has a beautiful campus in a ritzy, upscale neighborhood. Providence, well, it's a relatively short drive to Newport.

Gtown has been living in the past for 25 years, but this is the first time it feels like a breath of fresh air with no ties to Big John.

The best players from St. John's -- Mullin, Walter Berry, Mark Jackson, Malik Sealy, Ron Artest, Felipe Lopez, Zendon Hamilton -- ALL hailed from New York. Why? Because the campus is not exactly a draw for anyone who is not from New York.

The only city/town/campus in the Big East that can compete as a destination spot is maybe Villanova and Philly. DePaul is in Chicago, but you could sneeze and miss its campus.

Providence will always have a ceiling and the job will always have a ticking clock,
