Not sure how many of you are Rules hounds, but we lost a good one last night in Clyde Luther, who died at 88. Friend to our organization for sure, but he made a huge impact all over golf. One of the sharpest Rules minds out there. RIP, Clyde.

Mickelson now has two triple bogeys and a double bogey two plus rounds in Houston, and he's still 5 under. I'd say he's rounding into his traditional form just in time for Augusta.

  3. Poulter has turned it on. Atop the leaderboard and poised to post a 3rd round 64.
Still some work to do, but he can probably at least look at flights to Georgia for next week.

  4. The dude hollering "Ba Ba Booey" needs beaten and escorted from the course.
He could also stand to be more topical. Jesus!
Why not holler "Whatch You Talkin' About?!"

Clyde was a rules legend, volunteering all over the place after he retired as a United Airlines pilot.

He told me a story from many years ago, back when hijackings were all the rage. There was a passenger who boarded one of his flights who was very nervous and sweating profusely.

After takeoff, a flight attendant came into the cockpit and spoke to Luther about the passenger. What she said was that he was a first-time flyer and had a MISSAL with him. What Clyde heard was that he had a MISSILE with him. After the misunderstanding was ironed out, all went smoothly.

    RIP, Clyde.

    First-class all the way.

Mickelson finishes with a 67 for 10-under. If he'd just made bogey on the two triples he made this week, he'd be tied for the lead. But that's our Phil.

That's why we hackers love to watch Phil. It's like one of us weekend warriors saying, "I would have broke 100 if not for that 8 and 10 on my scorecard."*

    * — OK, maybe I said that last week ...

When the 1988 US Open was at the Country Club, it was all hands on deck for the Herald. Kevin Mannix, the Pats beat reporter, was there for one day and wound up doing a Seve sidebar. Walked the course with him for four hours. Asked why he chose this, Kevin responded, "he hits his drives in the places I wind up in, and almost all our readers, too."
