    Schilling but not Mussina?

Peak vs. a compiler, I assume?

I thought Mussina retiring off a 20-win season and leaving 30 wins shy of 300 was gonna hasten his path to Cooperstown. I was wrong.

    Case for Schilling.

    6-time All-Star
    3-time Cy Young Award runner-up
    2-time strikeout leader
    300 strikeouts 3 times
    216-146, 3.46 ERA
    11-2, 2.23 ERA in postseason
    4.38 strikeout to walk ratio
    3,116 strikeouts, 711 walks

I would vote for Schilling, yes. Why not Mussina?

I definitely think Mussina’s perceived disposition is holding him back with some voters. Idea that he lacked that killer instinct and was too intellectual.

That's a nice way of saying many writers saw him as a snooty dick. Which he could be. But I won't ever forget how he saved the Yanks' bacon in Game 7 of the 2003 ALCS. To me, his best performance, and I was at his near perfect game at Fenway.

Most remarkably, that was a.) his first professional relief appearance and b.) he came on after Roger Clemens did the usual Roger Clemens choking dog thing and wriggled out of a two-on, none-out jam to keep it 4-0 . Ballsy. Unlike Clemens.

    My ballot:
    Barry Bonds
    Roger Clemens
    Vladimir Guerrero
    Chipper Jones
    Edgar Martinez
    Mike Mussina
    Curt Schilling
    Sammy Sosa
    Jim Thome
    Omar Vizquel

If we can vote for more than 10, I would add Trevor Hoffman, Hideki Matsui, Fred McGriff, Manny Ramirez, and Johan Santana.

To be fair, Matsui probably has a better case than Ron Guidry...
