As much as people here like to denigrate these awards, it still means something to see your paper on (or off) the list. It should never be the goal, but it still validates a lot of good/hard work. Under increasingly difficult circumstances.

  3. Congratulations to all the (already, and soon-to-be-announced) winners. Great work being rewarded should make everyone happy.

    Writer categories are trickling in.

We got three out of four Top 10s in the 30-75 division -- which (humblebrag ahead) this little three-day daily will take gladly.

And congratulations, Matt Stephens. Saw your name there.

6 papers win 'Grand Slam' honors in APSE contest

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Six media groups won "Grand Slam" honors in the annual Associated Press Sports Editors' writing and sections contest that was held this week.

The Boston Globe, The New York Times and The Washington Post, competing in the over-175,000 circulation division, earned top-10 recognition for their daily, Sunday and special sections to go along with top 10 honors in the digital contest for its website and mobile platforms.

The Omaha World-Herald and The Seattle Times won in the 75,000-175,000 circulation category.

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle won top-10 section awards in the under 15,000 circulation division as well as top-10 digital honors.

The APSE awards, voted on by sports editors and journalists from across the nation during four days of judging at the Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, honor work published in 2015.

Twenty newspapers won Triple Crowns, signifying top 10 honors in three of four section/website categories. Those include:

    — Over 175,000 circulation: Los Angeles Times, Star Tribune, The Chicago Tribune, The Dallas Morning News, The Kansas City Star.

    — 75,0001-175,000: San Antonio Express-News, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, The Buffalo News, The Charlotte Observer.

    — 30,000-75,000: Lincoln Journal Star, The News Tribune (Tacoma, Wash.), The State (Columbia, S.C.), The Wichita Eagle

    — Under 30,000: Beaver County (Pa.) Times, Casper (Wyo.) Star-Tribune, Northwest Herald (Crystal Lake, Ill.), The Tuscaloosa News.

    — Under 15,000: Ames Tribune, Marietta Daily Journal, Opelika-Auburn News.

The New York Times led all news organizations with 12 individual awards.

Ryan Holmgren of the Casper Star-Tribune led the individual awards, capturing six honors, including multimedia, explanatory, game story, beat writing, feature writing and project reporting in the under-30,000 circulation category.

Jim Baumbach of Newsday won four writing honors, as did Brad Elliott Schlossman of the Grand Forks (N.D.) Herald.

The ranking of the top 10 in the writing, multimedia and video categories will be announced later this month. Winners will receive their awards in June at the APSE summer conference in Charlotte, North Carolina.
