Pac-10 has something to prove this week

The BCS championship trophy is handed to a team each year, not a conference.

But unlike, say, the Bush tax cuts, dollars from bowl berths by the upper class of a college football conference trickle down to teams a bit lower in a league’s caste system.

The Pac-10 splits its bowl revenue equally among (for now) 10 schools. Therefore, two conference teams earning hefty BCS bowl game payouts would do a lot to boost the budget of (for example) the downtrodden Washington State athletic department.

So while diehard Cougar fans want Nebraska to clobber Washington, it’s really in their team’s best interest for the Huskies and other Pac-10 schools to make a statement this weekend in the following high-profile games.

Publicity stunts such as a “bi-coastal media tour” are fine, but the best way for Commissioner Larry Scott to show his teams are worthy of elite bowl games is to prove it on the field.

The Pac-10 gets a crack at a couple of top-10 teams on its home turf this weekend, and can earn some much-needed respect in several other games. They include:

Iowa at Arizona: Two teams that have beat up on inferior opponents thus far. Unfortunately for Iowa, Wildcat QB Nick Foles is a bit tougher than Austen Arnaud. Unfortunately for Arizona, the Hawkeye defense is a bit more stout than Toldeo or The Citadel.

Nebraska at Washington: Another top 10 team visiting a Pac-10 campus. Jake Locker (and Jermaine Kearse) showed what they can do against Syracuse. Now the Huskies need to show it against the Black Shirts, who grabbed six INTs against Idaho.

Arizona State at Wisconsin: This one might be a tall order for the Pac-10, as the Sun Devils, although 2-0, had trouble putting away FCS foe Northern Arizona last weekend. For lack of anyone else, this game is probably the Badgers’ toughest nonconference test.

Wake Forest at Stanford: The Cardinal better not have a letdown after their convincing win in Los Angeles (and with a trip to South Bend ahead next week). Wake Forest won an AFL-style shootout with Duke and is looking to improve on last year’s 5-7 mark.

Louisville at Oregon State: Unlike Wisconsin, the Beavers have a challenging nonconference slate, with this game sandwiched by “road” contests against TCU and Boise State. The Broncos are desperately hoping for an Oregon State rout.

A side note on the Broncos: Unlike the AP poll, SportsJournalists.com voters didn’t penalize Boise State too much for Virginia Tech’s ugly home loss to James Madison. While the Broncos lost two No. 1 votes from last week, they remain at No. 3 in the SportsJournalists.com poll by a comfortable margin.

Here’s the rest of the SportsJournalists.com college football poll:

An update on the "Pac-10's chance to prove it" theme:

Friday night: Nevada 52, Cal 31 in Reno. Ouch. An ass-whuppin by a WAC team.

Early Saturday games: USC 32, Minnesota 21. Kiffin keeps winning, which is more than many Pac-10 teams can say.
Nebraska 56, UW 21. The freshman QB looked more like Heisman material than Locker, who sucked. But the Huskies D was even worse.
SMU 35, Wash. St. 21. The Mustangs avenge last year's loss for their first win over a BCS conference school in a decade.
Wisconsin 20, ASU 19. Arizona State could have won this game several different ways, but didn't. Still, Devils looked pretty good in defeat.

Oregon and Oregon St. are rolling in their games, but overall, a tough weekend so far for the supposedly improved Pac-10.

Arizona can still make a statement by topping Iowa tonight. Should be a good one. And UCLA and Stanford "should" be able to win home games.
