Our boy Jonesy's on there for his Iraq story that we all loved.
Anybody here read "Backpacker" because it cleaned up.

i've read backpaper for years, and in recent years, it seems to be doing the kind of stories that outside used to do -- the jon krakauer 'into thin air' pieces. outside still does some fine work -- if you can find it buried among the '10 days to better abs' stories -- but those stories aren't always your traditional outdoors stories.

field and stream, which is well represented, also does a nice job of sneaking in quality reporting/writing between the pages of 'how to stalk a 20-point buck on opening day' and 'how to catch more bass in the shallows' stories.

the virginia quarterly review has been on quite a run in these awards the past few years, too.

  3. Taibbi shut out, and he had a helluva year.
Selena's in there, too. Didn't notice that.

Papa, and the Longest Night by Sean Flynn (from GQ) were both awesome reads.

You're dead right about Backpacker. Outside is still a great magazine, but it seems to have started sliding toward an outdoorsy version Men's Health (workout tips) meets Esquire (celebrity profiles).

RS's piece on David Foster Wallace is in there, as is Hanna Rosin's wonderful "A Boy's Life" from the Atlantic.

I don't think Outside is half the magazine it was 10 years ago.

Jonesy's The Things That Carried Him vs. Hannah Rosin's Boy's Life story is Ali vs. Frazier. I loved both of those stories.

Nomination central for one of Mrs. Editude's former employers. :D
