2009 Belmont Stakes - Borel's curtain call

Discussion in 'Sports and News' started by Blitz, May 30, 2009.

  1. I'm just happy somebody still cares about the ponies.
How weird must it have been for Borel to look back in the stretch at Pimlico and see Mine That Bird running him down?

Dare anyone with a heart to carve out a piece of Saratoga during those six weeks and not care.
An entire way of life in that town is contingent on the existance of that piece of real estate
on Union Ave . . . and it rolls on, even with crowds that are sometimes too damn big,
and even if (if I hear right) Siro's is for sale . . .

One of my goals in life remains from years ago: Spend the Saratoga meet as a railbird. Been to the track, never for a race.
Alas, I don't think it will happen in this lifetime.

Get a weekend fare to Albany, and go for it.

To NOT do this guarantees a dotage of regret.

Yes, I've bet horses several times. And this was a "tip" in as much as I'd never heard of the horse.
I sweated the race all day, then took a break from walking the strip to take in those "fast three minutes" at Caesars sportsbook.

Later in the afternoon, on another bet I'd made that morning, Jonathan Papelbon served up a home-run pitch with two out in the ninth to spoil a sure win by Beckett and the BoSox.
    That one made me wince.
I'd laid $100 and was to collect $50 more

  6. And then save up and go to Keeneland in the spring.
    Best venue in America.
And maybe IJAG in a funny hat!

    UK sorority weekends out . . . good . . . plastic main track . . . bad.

  8. Saratoga - the first week in August every year for I don't know how many years. I've even had the privilege of watching a few races from up on the roof. Spectacular!

What would be the chance that Rachel or Mine That Bird would run the Travers Stakes?

Yup, Siro's is on the block.

Rachel could run it, especially since she's skipping the Belmont. Mine That Bird, not so sure. The Travers could be considered as the 4th Triple Crown race, IM(biased)O

  12. I have never been inside Siro's. I hear the food is good but I've never made it past the outside bar area. A tradition after ever race day.
