I still love the story about the argument that got Herzog tossed from the game. Don Denkinger was behind the plate in Game 7 after correctly calling the Orta play at first in Game 6.

Herzog: "If you hadn't blown that call we wouldn't be here tonight."

Denkinger: "If your team wasn't hitting .185 we wouldn't be here tonight."

For the first 7 innings or so. Being a horrible defensive player, Lynn Jones usually finished up games in left field.

    Here are two doozies:

    1. Darryl Motley hit Kansas City's second and final homer of the series. Who hit the first one?

    2. Jim Sundberg scored the winning run in Game 6. Who scored the tying run?

Frank White hit the homer, and the tying run was scored by whoever pinch ran for Steve Balboni.

From a West Coaster, yeah I remember the Orta moment, but what I remember more than that was how boring it looked on two turf fields with a bunch of slap hitters hitting ground balls. Thank goodness there was the Quis (may he RIP.)

I was born that year, but as a Cards fan, it's a year I want to forget.

There was a show on ESPN Classic a couple weeks ago on the '85 WS called "Five Reasons you can't blame Don Denkinger for the Cardinals losing the '85 World Series" (or some such cumbersome title). Did a very good job of showing that the bad call, like Bartman with the Cubs, was merely one small piece of a teamwide choke.
