    This is a great thread.

One other egregious item, Starman, was the fixing of the 1911 batting race between Cobb and Nap Lajoie, when the Browns basically handed Lajoie the batting title and a Chalmers auto by playing deep and letting him bunt for six base hits.

And what finally finished off Ban Johnson was the alleged game-throwing by Cobb and Tris Speaker in the waning moments of both their careers. Reports had it that there was more than enough evidence that both stars were -- shall we say -- more than a bit "unsavory" about a few of their meaningless games. But Johnson -- not wanting to embarrass the AL -- squashed the evidence.

The resulting flap about the ham-handed way he did this finally finished him as a respected entity in baseball.

And Starman, had the proposed secession of the Yankees, Red Sox and White Sox took place, McGraw would have faced a true Hobson's Choice. Yes, he would have had to compete with the Yanks, but he would also have driven a stake through the heart of the man he detested more than anyone else in baseball -- Ban Johnson.

doesn't it take nine guys to play baseball?

Sure. But it doesn't take nine to throw a Series.

    In this case it only took 5 . . . or 6.

Red Faber's healthy, and it's unlikely it happens.

Very, very possible. But if Faber's healthy ... Dickie Kerr probably never picks the splinters out of his ass. So Faber's presence might have been negated, anyway.
