Apparently it was used as fill material in the development of Manhattan

LMAO. If they dig deeper, they'll find more artifacts.

And all this time we thought Astoria was in Oregon.

Who knew they were referring to the Waldorf-Astoria?

Both named for the same Astor family. JOhn Jacob Astor made the family fortune in furs and opium (among other things). Astoria, Oregon was his outlet on the Pacific coast. His grandson was one of the founders of the hotel (later died on the Titanic)

Astoria, Queens was an attempt by the city (or some developer) to entice the Astor family to move there. Never did, but they built a nifty film studio there.

Much of Manhattan is built on fill. Most of the west side, including the Highway, WTC area and around the tip. Most of it was garbage. People just threw their junk out for the fill.

All of the World Financial Center & Battery Park City is fill -- mostly from the WTC.

Kips Bay, Turtle Bay (where the U.N. is) and various other inlets were filled in.

The growth of Manhattan -- the actual, physical growth -- is a fascinating story.
