Horrible, horrible news. Is this likely to be due to the age of the plane, or what else could have caused it?

Crashing while about to land is a different animal than crashing while trying to take off.

    Flaming jet fuel everywhere.

Damn, the count of the dead changed quickly.

I saw a headline earlier and it said 20 feared dead. Apparently, it swerved off the runway?

The link suggests it crashed and burned up trying to take off at the end of the runway. Apparently they had delayed it for a while with technical issues.

"Overshooting" the runway on takeoff means, to me, it never got airborne.

Yeah, I would imagine that's what happened.

And, if that is true, I would guess most of the deaths are not because of impact trauma, but incineration.

Geez...it's rare enough, but apparently you can really get in some trouble going to (or coming from, I suppose) the Canary Islands. The worst plane crash in history occurred there.

Some of these European budget airlines can be tricky. I'm not sure there's a ton of oversight being done there. In any case, an MD-82 isn't a new plane.

Just terrible. That Tenerife crash has always haunted me. 585 dead in that one.
