Chad Millman explained it pretty well on his espn.com gambling blog (one of the best things on that site yet tucked behind the insider pay wall) that if you see a golfer at 20-1, ask yourself if he could win one of the next 20 Opens. If the answer's yes, that's a good value bet. There's pretty much no value in betting any golfer at single-digit odds.

I get cised for your posts. Do you have a twitter account? I'm serious.

And I think Simmons understands how it works. He just is dumb sometimes and says stupid shit.

Seemed like a no-brainer from the talk. Gets the Open back into the Midwest since Olympia Fields, and I like the mixture of older courses (Oakmont, Olympic, Congressional, Pinehurst) and to try newer ones (Chambers Bay, Erin Hills). Guessing 2018 will get back into the New York market (Shinnecock), and NBC/USGA like the Open in prime time on the weekend when the Open is on the West Coast, so maybe time to go to Riviera and back to Torrey. Pebble will get it in 2020.

Wisconsin is now a majors hotbed, between Whistling Straits and Erin Hills. Great golf state.

It's interesting that the USGA goes for a new course in the Midwest where it has established multi-Open courses like Oakland Hills and Inverness that haven't seen an Open in quite some time. Medinah, too. There's nothing wrong with the new courses, mind you, I like the mixture, too.

A big reason for that, MG, is the fact that courses these days have to cast their lot with either the USGA or the PGA of America.

There isn't a lot of crossover anymore between the two, so you're not going to get to host a US Open and PGA like Medinah (Open '90, PGA '99/'06), Oakland Hills (Open '96, PGA '08) and Winged Foot (PGA '97, Open '06) all did within a decade or so. And many of the courses that "side" with the PGA of America do so as much to get a Ryder Cup as a PGA Championship.

There's enough great courses to go around. Of course, the Country Club rejected BOTH organizations.

Pebble's got it for 2019. They did an announcement today and everything. Only open date between now and then is 2018. Torrey Pines is lobbying for that date but they have to go back to New York sometime. Only problem is Shinnecock and Winged Foot members don't want it any more. That leaves Bethpage.

Terribly unfortunate, too. If ever there was an anniversary made in heaven, it was the 2013 Open at The Country Club.

So true. The Cinderella story to absolutely end all.

Nice on Pebble for 2019. And it makes more sense that year: It's the 100th anniversary of the club. Pebble also got the 2018 U.S. Amateur.

Guessing it will be Bethpage in 2018, to get it back East. Torrey should get another Open. It will be interesting how the 2012 Amateur plays out because a return to Cherry Hills is overdue (2020, 60th anniversary of Arnie's comeback?), just like Merion was overdue for a return.
