    Still not enough evidence to automatically invoke the death penalty.

    Will the desker get fired? Probably. Will the desker deserve it? Maybe.

    I’ve been there when stuff like this breaks.

    You are trying to do 85 things. Social media. Write heds. Edit copy. Run hed tests. Circle back to that issue you were flagged about an hour ago but couldn’t do then because your CMS was locked up. You’re the only production person around, too. There’s no net below the tightrope.

    And you’re trying to put a different spin on the headline on the homepage other than “ISIS leader is dead at 48.” You’re trying to have the hed on the homepage complement the breaking news, not repeat what readers know. You can do a straight ahead hed on the obit and override it manually on the homepage, but there are downsides to that.

    The only mitigating factor here was that word of this leaked about 12 hours before Trump announced it. You had more people around then and a bit more time to develop a strategy. Still, it’s breaking news chaos.

    Was it the best thing in the world? No. But we’ve seen much worse (see the Jeremy Lin hed from years ago).
