How did your paper play the David Beckham signing

Wie never belonged in the conversation.

For every nation where they love golf, there are 10 who like soccer. That eliminates Tiger. Schumacher . . . .his profile just isn't very high in the US. Yes, here come to racing wonks to argue, but please don't embarrass yourselves. Ditto Federer, he just isn't that well known in the US.

Which happens to feature a lot of sports fans.

I don't think the racing wonks, myself included, would argue Schumacher's profile in the U.S. He's said himself that he likes coming here because nobody recognizes him. Still, he and Beckham (and maybe El Tigre) are the most recognizable athletes in the world.

I can agree with that, with Becks leading the rankings. For active athletes, at least. I like to think the average soccer fan knows who Pele or Maradona are before they recognize Beckham, who is largely a media creation at this point.

In England? Brazil? Argentina? Most of Europe/South America?

    Asia?

There is indeed question. It would be closer than you think.

It will be the topic of my column in this coming week's paper.

We're leaving it alone now until something else really happens. It was a good niche story ... but not a daily, keep-the-ball-alive sort of issue. For most papers, anyway.

I was wondering why this was resurrected.

    Sadly Brad won't be.
