SportsDesigner.com's already got this covered nicely, but on the off-chance that you folks haven't made it over there (which you should!), here's some baseball preview covers from across the nation:

Thought the Washington Post was the best illustration.
Loved the Marlins cover (too small to read which paper it is)
and thought the second Felix H. cover and the Press-Enterprise had the best use of pictures. Although there's a little gray around FH's neck in that photo -- don't know if that's photoshop deal or reproducing the page on the net. The rest of it is really strong, tough.
No idea why the Star Tribune cover has a big pic of Ruth and a small picture of Hank. A quibble, however, probably best left to a Whitlock thread on Anything Goes.

Didn't go to sportsdesigner.com to check, but anybody know whether St. Pete shot each guy with the glasses on or if it's photoshop magic?

To answer Jay's question, from the St. Pete Times' sports design portfolio:

    Ah, answers that.
I knew about the glasses -- and their significance.
Didn't know how they pulled it off, though.

    Good stuff.

The best reason I can think of, from reading/seeing some of the inside stuff, is that it's mostly about single-season power, which Ruth is more of the icon for, instead of Aaron, who's the symbol for career power.

But that's just my rationalizing. By that standard, Bonds should be big, but he's a polarizing image, to say the least.

Well, that one post was all it took to convince me I live in a crappy sports (media) market -- as if I needed convincing.

    That's some good stuff.

I loved most all of them, but really liked the "Central issue" cover.

Not sure how DyePack feels, though. These might be a bit too ... well, flashy.

The Marlins cover makes no sense to me.
They are not "back to the small pond" (i.e., big fish, small pond), they are now the small fish after the winter fire sale.
    The concept is just wrong.
