LeBell was the "Godfather of Grappling" and was well known beyond being just the name of one of Bryan Danielson's finishing maneuvers. His qualifications are numerous, and supposedly, he once choked out Steven Seagall and made Seagall shit his pants. And one time, a mugger decided to attack an elderly LeBell, who proceeded to beat the holy heck out of him.

In pro wrestling, there are also numerous stories about him. Freddie Blassie had a couple of them in his book. One time, Bearcat Wright won the LA promotion's world title (becoming the first African-American to win a promotion's world belt). Wright refused to drop the belt to anyone. Mike LeBell (Gene's brother), set it up so Blassie would win the belt back. Blassie talked to Wright beforehand, making sure Wright was on board and the money was fine, etc. Wright was fine, until he punched Blassie and knocked him out. So they set up another title match, but had Gene enter the ring instead, and Wright ran off because he knew Gene would shoot on him.

Another Gene story is that he was the referee for the infamous Ali-Inoki match. The match was supposed to be a work and Vince told the story (in Blassie's book), that he wanted the worked finish to be that early in the fight, Gene would stumble, accidentally headbutt Ali, stop to "check" on Ali's head and blade him without Ali knowing about it. Then stop the fight later on for excess blood and set up a rematch. But Ali wanted it to be a shoot because he thought he could beat Inoki.
