I have no doubt the White House believes what it's saying, but some brake-pumping might be in order.

Two prominent figures have resigned in protest from the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft—one of the only major think tanks to promote a skeptical view of US power and military interventionism. In announcing their departures, Joe Cirincione and Paul Eaton criticized the organization’s dovish response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“This is a completely unjustified, unprovoked invasion of a sovereign state. There was no justification for this,” Cirincione said in an interview Thursday with Mother Jones. “And yet Quincy keeps justifying it.”

This is a little bit of good news. Since Ukraine retook Snake Island a couple of weeks ago, it's allowed them to resume grain exports. Whoever controls that hunk of rock is able to control a key shipping lane. Now that Ukraine is in control of it, it's able to ship stuff through a couple of Danube River ports and hug the coastline of NATO countries. Seems the Ukrainians had also been planning this by refurbishing those ports while they were working to retake Snake Island.

First, Ukraine Liberated Snake Island. Now, It’s Shipping Grain From Nearby Ports.

That's great news. A typical grain ship carries between 10,000 to 60,000 tons of grain. A single tractor-trailer can only carry up to 40 tons at a time.

The Quincy Institute is an odd duck. There is a desperate need in the US foreign policy sphere for credible voices to stand against the military-industrial complex and the shambling corpse of neoliberalism -- something QI would seem well-poised to do given its outlook and "transpartisan" nature -- but the frequency with which Quincy talking heads find themselves denying atrocities and singing the praises of foreign autocrats does a lot to undermine the worthwhile messages coming out of the institute.
