    Ahh, damn. Loved his version more than the original.

    Also liked his rendition of "Smoke, Smoke, Smoke (that Cigarette)."

    This is so sad. They were a great band, and based on my slight but real acquaintance, he was a real good fellow, too.

    That's me with the Commander after a show at The Birchmere in Alexandria, Va., seven years ago. Came out and played the second set with his pal Bill Kirchen and then indulged all the fanboys like me. And seemed to have a good time doing it.

    RIP. I'm crushed

    The name may have come originally from Commando Cody, star of a 1950s Republic serial.
