I think its safe to say that this year has eclipsed 9/11 in terms of impact on Americans. 9/11 was brutal in a number of ways, it seemed to come out of nowhere, shattering the idea that the US was safe from that sort of thing and it was very public. And it initiated a war we are still fighting almost 20 years later - more US killed in "defense" of 9/11 than in the act itself.
That said, life for the average American wasn't disrupted that much, unlike COVID-19.

Good point. Plus, for a big chunk of Americans, 9/11 had an companion, Pearl Harbor. COVID-19 was unlike anything any of us had experienced.

Covid-19 is an acute threat that may or may not have long lasting implications for our lives.

9/11 had a very long-lasting impact on the country in terms of the changes it forced us to make permanently.

Yeah, Sept. 11th nation-wide is a fraction of what COVID is doing.

    World-wide, it’s not even debatable.

In some cases, emails from communications aides to CDC Director Robert Redfield and other senior officials openly complained that the agency’s reports would undermine President Donald Trump's optimistic messages about the outbreak, according to emails reviewed by POLITICO and three people familiar with the situation.
