So it looks like DC's football team will likely be changing its name this week, finally.

Anybody else have a situation where you have any local teams (HS/college/whatever) that still have Native American names/logos?

We have two high schools in our county that still have Indian-head logos...I'm thinking this is a good opportunity to start the conversations about changing those.

We have 4 or 5 HS teams with Native American nicknames. Questions are being raised now. Also, cities are looking at possibly changing the names of schools named for people with Confederate histories. That includes one high school whose name is more than 100 years old and for a long while was the only school for whites in the city.

We have a public high school named the Warriors that up until about 2 years ago was saying a prayer before kickoff over the PA ... so, no

Lots of Indians around, some Warriors, a few Braves. It's harder with HS sports just from the perspective of the cost of changing it.

Still very common in rural Missouri:
    By my quick count:
    • 25 Indians
    • 10 Warriors (not necessarily a Native American logo or reference. Didn’t look at logos.)
    • 1 Braves
    • 1 Redmen
    • 1 War Hawks
    • 1 Blackhawks
    • 1 Redhawks
    • 1 Chiefs

And, of course, the Savannah Savages a large-ish school close to St. Joseph.

The yearslong debate over Nathaniel Bedford Forrest High School in Jacksonville finally ended after I left the city. It became Westside High School.

Robert E. Lee High School, Jefferson Davis Middle School and J.E.B. Stuart Middle remain for now.

Walpole, Mass., was the Rebels for years and the logo was the Confederate battle flag. Apparently they also sang “Dixie” at the games. School board voted a few weeks ago to ditch the name. The football coach/AD for years was an old-school Southern guy. No one said anything because at the time they were one of the state’s more successful programs.

I think if you’re Redmen you might have an issue. If you’re a Cheiftain Chief or Sachem its fine.

If you’ve got a Cleveland style goofy logo, change to the KC Chief arrowhead with school letter.

Little River Redskins in Kansas. They're probably going to double-down, though, knowing the makeup of that town. Last time there was a movement to change the name, a group of alumni erected a huge sign on the highway turnoff into town with imagery and the words, "You're Entering Redskins Country!" (or something to that effect).

Still have a handful around here on either side of the border. Did a whole story this week on the history of such debates in this area with the earliest we know of was a school changing from Rebels to Vikings in 1974. Another one dropped “Indians” in the 90s. The bigger discussion in the South seems to be over “Rebels.” This past week, an area school just dropped “Rebels” completely — they had changed their logo from a Confederate soldier in 2009 but kept the name.

In Orange County, Savanna High (Anaheim) is the Rebels. There are several Warriors, including parochial schools. They claim it refers to Warriors for God. Woodbridge High (Irvine) is the Warriors. A public school. whs-header_newlogo2.png
