NASCAR's front office is being forced to walk a very fine line here. The Frances have been Republican toadies for decades, contributing millions of dollars and playing up the whole conservative cause, and they have to know their debased base is already grumbling about being told they can't stay in 1964 forever. So does NASCAR denounce what the Head Cheeto said and risk alienating even more "fans" or keep moving closer to a real modern era?

Daytona Beach was silent on the comments until just a few minutes ago, releasing a statement that they stand with Bubba Wallace but they avoided a head-on comment addressing the President's B.S. Will be interested to see if that's enough to keep both Madison Avenue and Main Street USA happy, or will they have to actually grow a set if Trump continues to throw the sport under the bus?

The fact that Trump is threatening NASCAR to force its fans to stay in lock step is an unbelievable turn of events. He's clearly in panic mode.

He's fighting with the NFL and NASCAR. What's next, the US Chamber of Commerce? The Mormon Tabernacle Choir?

Well when you've already argued that the judicial system, the press, the FBI, science, voting and a few other things that help knit together the social fabric of our country are "against you" - why not go for sports? I imagine Christianity is in the on-deck circle.

"The Bible, that book with the stories about all those old Jews, you know it has some good parts. But what's the whole thing about Jews? How come there's nothing about Making America Great? It's like it was Fake News before CNN and the Times.

"You know, we're going to go out building stuff, really good stuff in this country, instead of arks and stone tablets and killing giants with rocks. And what's the deal about fish and loaves? My casinos had good food, real fish, not that imitation crab meat and Italian bread fresh from New Jersey, overnight delivery, not stale rye or that stuff Jews eat that doesn't have any taste.

"Plus, Jesus was too dirty to get a room in my hotels. It's a good thing somebody washed his feet. He should have been a tailor instead of a carpenter. He'd have dressed better. Those Romans, they were good people. They did some stuff maybe that wasn't too good, but they killed animals and people came and watched. I've seen movies about that. Gladiolas. Those gladiolas would have made great Marines."

Remember when Firestone and Goodyear were providing tires for stock cars when the then-Alabama International Motor Speedway opened?

The surface was considered especially abrasive. Goodyear pressed on. Firestone withdrew and hasn't been seen by NASCAR since.

Guess Firestone might not have been wrong, eh?

I can't put into words how happy NASCAR has made me lately. It has been a bright spot.

The FIRST thing I learned about NASCAR at the very first race I covered in New Hampshire in 1995 was how much more complex and varied a sports universe it was compared to its image among us Yankees.
