It's just interesting to me that golf is the one sport willing to put out dates they might well have to take back. These are exceptionally well-connected organizations. They could well be wrong, but they are reflecting the conventional wisdom of the top strata of our society.

Golf is unique, though, in that you have a half-dozen sanctioning bodies overseeing the sport and all needing the same top talent to succeed. They have to make sure they're not stepping on each other's toes with their dates, so even if they have to cancel later on it helps to lay out who gets what weekend.
If the NFL or MLB want to push their seasons back a month, they can do it without worrying whether they have to share players with the CFL or the Atlantic League.

For many years, CBS broadcast the men’s final of the U.S. Open tennis tournament. During that week of the NFL season (Week 2 in years that saw the season start Labor Day weekend, Week 1 of other seasons), CBS would not air any games in the late-afternoon window. So take that concept and flip it, removing CBS from the early window. Arrange the tee times to where the final group is walking onto the 18th green at about 3:30 p.m. The NFL also typically has one or two weeks in which six teams get byes. So make Masters week one of those. Once you take out the prime-time games on Thursday, Sunday and Monday, you’re left with only 10 games. Give Fox the doubleheader. Four games in the early afternoon and two games in the late-afternoon doubleheader window on Fox. Four late games on CBS immediately after Jim Nantz signs off from Augusta, starting at 4:25 p.m. EST. That offers about 45 minutes of cushion if there is a playoff. And as Michael said, reverse the networks for the U.S. Open golf tournament.

Agreed. But these organizations I believe are a reflection of the conventional wisdom and/or wishful thinking of the powers that be in our society.

Augusta National's membership includes Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Roger Goddell and Tom Ridge. They're tuned in.

That's a good way to do it for the Masters. The 4:25 window is the second best one after Sunday night in terms of ratings. Usually you don't have a lot of games in that slot. It will be a lot harder to do it for Fox for the U.S. Open because it's going to be in Week 2 and teams only get one bye so you don't have that luxury.

Or ... the NFL already knows it's not starting on time and that week will be available for the Open. It struck me as odd that they're going to have the Open and the Ryder Cup in consecutive weeks, but nothing in October. And there is talk of a reduced NFL schedule, of 14 games or even 12.

Next year's champion's dinner is going to be lit, with Scott Piercy serving up flat brims and hot takes.
