Maybe. Robert McNamara, who steered LBJ into Vietnam full-throttle, was a carryover from JFK.

A lot of people here probably know better than I do, but watching the Ken Burns Vietnam series in 2017 got me reading a lot of Vietnam War history, and my takeaway from the bulk of it was we were already balls deep and cruising for a disaster by the time Kennedy was killed and there wasn't anything he or anyone else was likely to do to change things. Sure, they COULD have, but the way things were set up for there to be a tremendous political price for pulling out or severely limiting our engagement.

The shame is LBJ is forever linked by most to Vietnam and not the Great Society.

Read Doris Kearns Goodwin's book on LBJ.

Also, someone to love is forever linked by most to Jefferson Airplane and not the Great Society.

If I had the time, I'd read Robert Caro's. Although 4 volumes in and he hasn't gotten past 1964

    Too dense.
I've had Gibbon on the shelf for 20 years.
Maybe if ever laid up it might be instructional to finally break it out. The material is rather current.

One could spend a lifetime just studying the 1960s.

Have I been sleeping for all these years?
Is it magic that makes you appear?
When you walked in the oval I felt my heart break
But you in a mood when I look at your face
In your tweets I sense a danger
You've got the eyes of a stranger
