Iowa was an utter wasteland for 20 years before Fry arrived. They had been good under Forest Evashevski in the 50s, then fell off the end of the earth.

Dealt with Fry several times during my years covering the Big Ten. Always, for me at least, easy to deal with. Others' mileage may vary.

I'll always think of him having the visitors locker room painted pink as a psychological thing.

Fry was a Texan through and through until he went to Iowa
Played at Baylor and had success at SMU and North Texas before going to Iowa

A few days ago, Bump Elliott. Tonight, Hayden.

My grandpa will be crushed when I tell him the news in a few minutes. Hayden is a few months older than he is.

No man was as instrumental in building a consistent winner like Hayden did at Iowa football, and no one was as instrumental in building a stable athletic program like Bump Elliott.

Always find it fascinating in posts like these to hear from those who post here of having dealt with/worked around the person the post is about. More of those stories, please.

I would be remiss if this doesn't get mentioned.

    Hayden Fry produced:

Bob Stoops: winningest coach at Oklahoma
Kirk Ferentz: winningest coach at Iowa
Bill Snyder: winningest coach at Kansas State
Dan McCarney: winningest coach at Iowa State
Barry Alavrez: winningest coach at Wisconsin

    All turned their programs around.
