For me, the site had become Magary and then Roth. It is basically going to be a non-click for me going forward.

Nick Denton is a douche who could have prevented much of this, so skim his comments at the beginning, but the rest of this I think is smart.

How much traffic did Magary alone generate for Deadspin? Has to be a sizable chunk.

Oooooooof. That's a really bad spot. I genuinely feel for the guy.

All of this started, of course, when fucking Daulerio wouldn't take down Hulk Hogan's sex tape and then made that crack during his deposition about child porn. They blame Peter Thiel, but Daulerio put the powder in the bomb. This week is just another shock wave from that one, catastrophic error.

Aye. Some might call it karmic.
If you believe in that sort of thang.

Oh, trust me, I had plenty of issues with lots of Deadspin folks, including Magary. (He came to me privately for advice all the time and then would shit-talk me on Twitter.) But I believe him when he says his health scare changed him, and I feel for anybody with kids who fears how to provide for them. Magary basically had no good option here. He stays and he's essentially a scab; he leaves and he loses his chief source of income and benefits.

I go back to Daulerio and his idiocy. He put so many people in such bad spots. I don't know how somebody hasn't kicked the shit out of him by now.

Typefitter, they made it personal with you. That was always abundantly clear.
I think about the only excuse that can be made for Daulerio is it appears he was a serious drug addict. (I'd guess he wasn't the only one, either.)
Deadspin has kicked a lot of people in the nuts over the years. Some people who were already down on the ground.
Kicked 'em in the nuts and laughed, as their Salacious Crumb-like commenters laughed.
Let them enjoy their Irish wake but we are not obligated to rend our garments, as that one asshat implied (Laura Wagner).

The article pointed out what shitheads the private equity owners are, no news there. Yet most here choose to direct their ire at the writers, or their 'wokeness'.

    Jesus fucking christ

We're in the middle of an era where money people have realized that buying media companies to essentially bleed them and then kill them not only profitable, but also wins them atta boys from the worst kind of people. They have no more romantic attachment to any journalism entity than they do Toys R Us. It's fine to dislike Deadspin and acknowledge they have, at times, loaded the gun that ultimately killed them. But someone definitely murdered them and that's a very bad development for the future of journalism, which needs institutions to be a thorn in the side of the powerful. The same vampire squids that that killed Deadspin would gleefully kill the New York Times and Washington Post if they could make $1 million doing it, and not give one shit about what it meant for society.

    Magary joined the mass exit.
