    story on Brown. His rookie year was when Lombardi was there. Lombardi had hoped Ray McDonald, a former number one draft pick, would win the job not just for talent. McDonald had got busted for buggery, and despite his conservative image, Lombardi was a supporter of gay rights. (There is no evidence lombardi knew tight end Jerry smith was gay). Anyway, Lombardi noticed Brown was getting the job done, but struggled with going off sides. On a hunch, he had brown tested for hearing loss. Turns out brown was practically deaf in one year. They got him a hearing aid and the rest was history.
