It’s interesting you’d pick a date after the 1994 crime bill.

But if you think the summer of 2016 was the apogee of American history, the good news for you is, give it 10 years. You’re gonna love the future.

I see you chose to not answer my question.

And if the future is one without Donald Trump or anyone connected to him, I'm sure I'll like it more than the present.

A fascinating take. Really. Suicide rates skyrocketing, overdose deaths, too, a nation in protest over police violence, off-the-charts income disparity, health care fiascoes everywhere, US academic performance lagging far behind other developed nations...but the summer 2016, that's the best America's ever been.

I think you come by the opinion honestly, though. Not doubting that for a second.

Allowing our brothers and sisters in Christ to fully participate in the UMC is not a "leftward" move. It's a Christ-like move.

Oh, not exactly. I asked the question as a way of considering your framework. But, in the summer of 2016, churches were about as liberal as they are now so, in that way, it's pretty consistent. That was definitely the peak of LGBT rights, which I assume, based on your answer, you hold as perhaps the highest priority for measuring a country's goodness.

Again, you're gonna love the future. The present stinks for progressives, in a sense, but Trump is such a disaster for the long-term movement of the conservatism and Christianity that'll be hard for well-adjusted young Americans to trust it. The progressive no-rules, no-limits message of "everything for everyone, all the time, forever" is appealing, and will hold sway soon enough and, over a much longer period of time, Americans will grow more "spiritual" and polytheistic, realizing that it's less frustrating to appeal to one of many gods who fit your mood of the day vs. appealing to one god who has to change to fit your mood.

Tell the African churches that, the congregants in those privileged enclaves of Liberia and Congo.

Here's part of a speech of one bishop:

And then please hear me when I say as graciously as I can: we Africans are not children in need of western enlightenment when it comes to the church’s sexual ethics. We do not need to hear a progressive U.S. bishop lecture us about our need to “grow up.” Let me assure you, we Africans, whether we have liked it or not, have had to engage in this debate for many years now. We stand with the global church, not a culturally liberal, church elite, in the U.S.
