"Have you been out of the country?"
    "Yeah."
    "Long trip?"
    "About 240,000 miles each way."
    "How long did you stay?"
"Just overnight. Took three days each way."
"Bringing back any fruits or vegetables?"
    "Only if Tang counts."
    "Carrying anything else?"
    "About 80 pounds of rocks."
"Any phone calls from anybody while you were there?"
    "Yeah, Nixon."
    "Any problem getting around?"
"Nah, just a small step then a giant leap."
"I have to ask ... carrying any drugs?"
    "Just our suicide pills."
    "I knew it!"
"Just kidding. Here, you can give them to your kids."
    "Suicide pills? WTF, dude."
    "Nah, they're Tic-Tacs."

I, too, watched a good deal of Smithsonian Channel programming Saturday.

Also, a shout-out to C-SPAN for airing CBS coverage of Armstrong and Aldrin doing their thing.

Walter Cronkite was pretty windy, at times. Came a split-second from stepping on Armstrong's big announcement.

Speaking of Nixon. One of those awkward Nixon moments when he visits the astronauts in quarrantine and asks, among other things, if they saw the All-Star Game.

I think he asked them if they "knew about the All-Star Game" when he was mentioning things that had happened while they were away.

And as it turns out, they did.

Refused to attend the launch. Sent Lyndon Johnson instead.

They didn't have much else to do in the quarantine trailer so I imagine they watched whatever baseball was on. Only in those days it wasn't much.

The ASG took place while they were en route back to earth, about 100,000 miles away. My guess is their antenna reception wasn't too good.

Chris Kraft's character appeared fairly significantly in "Apollo 13," but was never identified by name. He didn't want the whole celebrity game.

Von Braun, similarly, was fairly prominent in "The Right Stuff," but never named; they really softpedaled the situation with the Germans.

He was one of the original steely-eyed misslemen. At 45, Kraft would have been almost as old as the fathers of some of the guys sitting at the consoles in Mission Control. I think the average age of the engineers on the floor was something around 26.
