What North American city leads the way in defunct professional sports franchises? This list includes minor league franchises.

 

Memphis or Birmingham would be my guess.

Technically the MLB Dodgers and Giants are not defunct. But they sure don't exist any more, and might as well be to the residents of NYC.

 

North American is an interesting way to word that, but I'm still going to guess St. Louis

My NYC list was just from the four existing major leagues. Doesn't include the various football startups like the WFL/USFL/XFL, pro tennis, or the WHA. Strangely enough, the original metro area ABA franchise (the New Jersey Americans) still exists as the Brooklyn Nets.

 

It’s NYC. When you add in defunct leagues, the number is almost staggering.
