Y.A. Tittle was long retired by the time I discovered the NFL, but, for a while, whenever I saw his name in print, I heard it as Yay Ay Tittle in my head.

Mike D’Antoni was a tough one for me for a long time. I kept pronouncing him as Deeee An-Tony.

In our newspaper office, we intentionally mispronounced names. Pu-Jol-ees, etc. We joked that if anybody ever got a broadcasting job, they would say it wrong without even realizing it.

Until I saw a soccer roundup show one day, I thought Ajax was pronounced like the cleanser.

When I was about 10 and getting into hockey and had no knowledge of French, I pronounced a young Penguins star’s name as Lem-u-x. One of my sisters corrected me.
