    Content Editor - Sports

The Palm Beach Post is looking for a Content Editor for Sports.

This position requires strong editing skills, solid news judgment, managing people, time management, communication, adapting to new technologies, a willingness to try innovative approaches and working well individually and as part of a team.

    Responsibilities include:

    • Being the lead digital person in sports. This means understanding the digital space (platforms, audiences); setting the digital strategy; maximizing content and its reach by using best practices such as SEO, multimedia, keywords, links, etc.; understanding analytics on all our platforms (website, social media and newsletters). They will help reporters track their content through analytics and provide feedback on what works and what doesn’t.

    • They will run our social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram), our newsletters, maybe even podcasts down the road. They’ll set up Facebook Lives and come up with innovative ways to engage with our audience, tracking success or failures through metrics.

    • They will be responsible for sending stories to our editing center for print, including deadline copy, and proofing pages. They would have to work a night desk shift once a week (likely Thursdays) and be available to work Friday and Saturday nights at certain times of the year, especially the busy falls.

    • They will assist the Sports Editor with daily and long-term planning for digital and print.

    • They will run the department in the SE’s absence. This includes talking to reporters for event coverage and enterprise reporting, multimedia people for digital extras and print content, and the Bridge Team for print planning. They will create a daily budget for the Sports section, book the section (including choosing photos and information boxes), put together sports roundups and give first reads on the main stories of the day. They will coordinate sports stringers and part-timers. They will stay on top of the Wires and online sites for breaking news.

    • They will help plan and come up with new ways to increase our audiences for big events such as the Honda Classic, Oasis Championship, Spring Training, Delray Tennis, the Super Bowl, FAU football, Dolphins games. They will understand what content does well on what platforms.

    • They will identify trending topics and be able to react swiftly to serve our audience. This could mean seeing a topic trending and getting staff reporters to react quickly; if they aren’t available it could mean creating that content theirself.

    • They will be the point person for our Prep coverage. They’ll be tasked to come up with innovative ways to increase traffic, such as creating new platforms (like a Prep Instagram account) and maximizing our Twitter audience. They’ll help Prep reporters come up with ideas to create “must-read” content, like “Top 10 lists” and Recruiting Big Boards. They will be an integral part of our Best of the Preps special sections and banquet.

    • They will work with the Sports Editor to develop solid working relationships with fellow Gatehouse Sports Editors so we share our content.

Yes, very similar to an ASE...and yes, a lot is asked.

We were talking about this on another thread. Gatehouse bought this a year ago. Approximately how many editorial positions have been cut?

Has this position been filled? Haven’t seen anything about it since the initial post a couple months ago.
