Phil Martelli is a Philadelphia icon

For fuck’s sake, they’re St. Joe’s. Once Nova got a decent coach again, their goose was cooked.

And Martelli was there for 10 more as an assistant. I think this is an example of a school firing the old coach after a couple bad seasons and then spending the next 24 years in the toilet. How can that administration expect St. Joseph to be a power playing in the shadow of Villanova?

Philadelphia has had enough local talent in previous years for multiple programs to succeed. Temple, Nova and LaSalle all had tournament teams in the 80s while the city’ Two best talents went to USC. I have no issue with removing a Martelli as coach but the execution of this is Shit. They should have done what Temple did with Fran: this upcoming season is your last.

I always thought it was funny that Martelli bore a passing resemblance to John Finn, who played the John Stillman character on Philadelphia-based "Cold Case."

Just got the link from a friend and former colleague up there.

New AD. The new-sheriff-in-town-and-don't-you-forget-it move that frequently insecure new ADs make in an attempt to establish themselves.

Martelli earned the chance to call his shot. This is a crock.

Wichita can only pay him $3.5M if he’s playing into the second weekend of the NCAA.

Otherwise, he becomes Chris Lowery at Southern Illinois... at five times the price.

Yup. And he's a little too grating a personality to BS his way around for too long if he's not winning enough to justify that salary.

Dunleavy just cratered this year. 4-27, 0-18 in conference, and ended the season on a 21-game losing streak. Tulane's tried the hotshot assistant (Shawn Finney, then Dave Dickerson), the mid-major head coach (Ed Conroy, who at least made a CBI and a CIT) and the NBA coach. They haven't even made an NIT since 2000.

A school like Tulane is in a bad spot - even if they hire a guy who turns it around, he'll be gone in two or three years. Might be better off finding an in-state DII or NAIA or whatever coach who has been around a while and isn't likely to bolt for a better job.

I can’t think of too many prestige programs that would love to have Gregg Marshall. Going to the AAC will be his undoing at Wichita.
