Including interims -- and they're the king of the interim coach -- UNLV has had 14 head coaches in the 27 seasons since Tarkanian got whacked. Plenty of $ in Vegas, but none of it goes to UNLV because nobody of any consequence went to school there.

There were plenty of boosters around during the Tark days.

And they were shady characters. When UNLV finally got hammered enough by the NCAA, it severed the ties with the bad guys. And now you have what you should expect of a school with zero academic reputation and historical (endowment) resources.

It's because Bill Moos kept inexplicably rolling over Kent's contract. Moos is long gone, but WAZZU owes Kent $4.2 million because of him. Thanks Bill.

Does UNLV need to do something big in this hire to prevent sinking deeper down the scale behind the Golden Knights and Raiders?

UNLV definitely needs to make a hire that will turn the program around and also draw attention to it. But they have no money. Pitino is the perfect choice.

There comes a time in some programs when the "one shining moment" is all people remember about a program and they forget that traditionally the program never did much. UNLV was a dirty program when they were good. Texas has about as many tourney appearances since 2000 as they do from before 2000. Still, only a handful fo Eights and Fours. The school's biggest problem is a) they care more about football and always will and b) they play in the same conference as Kansas where the opposite is true. Players know that.

Is Texas Tech a better job than VaTech?

Do you mean A&M since Buzz Williams is viewed as the front-runner there?
