Job opportunity at Gannett | USA TODAY NETWORK - Sports Editor

The Clarion Ledger, a Pulitzer Prize-winning part of the USA TODAY Network, is looking for a sports editor dedicated to developing talented journalists in a fast-paced, digitally focused operation that includes one of the largest sports awards in the country while also providing an authoritative and thoughtful voice for our sports audiences.

    JOB DETAILS

The Clarion Ledger sports editor oversees coverage of three Division I college teams (two in the SEC, one in Conference USA), two SWAC college teams, statewide high school sports, ongoing enterprise projects and seasonal video series exploring different facets of athletics in Mississippi and the South. In the past few years, coverage has included an unlikely run to the No. 1 ranking in college football, numerous bowl games, College World Series appearances, two women’s Final Four appearances, an NCAA investigation into recruiting violations, two high-profile coaching scandals and national coaching searches.

Our coverage is built around digital storytelling and mobile consumption. While we maintain a strong print product, our sports editor focuses on building the best digital platform for Mississippi sports coverage in the country. This includes real-time reporting, unique video series, deep storytelling, social engagement and strong analysis.

The sports editor is also a key driver of our annual Mississippi Sports Awards, the largest high school sports event in the state and one of the largest across the USA TODAY Network. Approximately 2,000 people each year gather each one night each year to honor the top student athletes across the state in dozens of sports. Past special guests include Dak Prescott, Drew Brees, Tim Tebow, Mia Hamm and Nomar Garciaparra.

We have produced talented sports writers who have moved on to The Athletic, ESPN, NFL Network, Chicago Sun-Times, Baton Rouge Advocate, NOLA.com, AL.com, 247 and the Associated Press. A continued focus on recruiting and developing top talent is a must.

    JOB REQUIREMENTS

    • Demonstrated record of leading a coverage team, including remote writers

    • Proven history of guiding strong watchdog, enterprise and features work across multiple platforms

    • Strong social media skills

    • Understanding of best uses of live and recorded video and how to inculcate video skills throughout the team

    • Ability to work well on deadline

    • Ability to write with accuracy and precision

    • Excellent communication and time-management skills

    • Command of media law and principles of ethical conduct

Kellenberger just announced via Twitter he's leaving the C-L, but didn't say where he's going.

I assume we'll get a "Why I'm joining The Athletic" column at some point soon.

He had two writers leave for The Athletic so that's probably a good possibility.

I'll be curious to see what his role is at The Athletic.

There's been a ton of turnover at the Clarion Ledger in the last year.
