The Detroit Free Press (freep.com) is seeking a Deputy Sports Editor who will work closely with the Sports Editor to promote sharp, authoritative content in one of the most robust sports markets in the country.

The right candidate will play a prominent role within a hard-working newsgathering operation that focuses on the Big Six: Lions, Pistons, Red Wings, Tigers, Michigan Wolverines and Michigan State Spartans.

The deputy will have some assigning duties and will work closely with a talented group of reporters to promote deeper, digital-first storytelling. The job includes night and weekend work and some print responsibilities.

We want a strong leader and talented front-line editor who is digital-savvy and raring to make our products better. The Free Press has a tremendous digital footprint that reaches more than 20 million readers each month. The deputy will work alongside the Sports Editor to formulate cutting-edge ideas that grow our audience and distinguish us from our competitors. There is no ambition too big for this role.

We’re looking for someone who wants to be part of a winning team, dedicated to producing sports content with impact, excitement and information. Media management experience is important.

Interested candidates should email a resume and cover letter to Chris Thomas at cdthomas@freepress.com.

Well one thing's for sure, you will be able to find affordable housing, even on a journalist's salary.

Surprised at how quiet this post was initially, but we have a winner! And a potential opening, but we'll see...

Dana Sulonen posted on her Twitter feed that she was named deputy SE. Auburn to Nashville to Detroit, all within the space of a year. Not too shabby. (And no, I don't know Dana but congratulations!)

I do know Dana, not at all surprised by this. Good for her, good for Detroit.

Not surprised either. Fast track. Good for her. Wonder if that means if her soon-to-be former job will be on the market or if they do away with it.

  6. Dana was terrific in her year with #TeamTennessee in Nashville. Proud of her. She will do great things in Detroit. And, yes, we are filling the position. We are already interviewing candidates and hope to have someone in place soon after Dana leaves.
