Y'all a word of caution. This is a McClatchy paper that recently cut its sports department from 4 to 2. This is a hotbed for high school football in Georgia, but McClatchy apparently didn't think that was important. Laid off both local writers and went down to a UGA football writer and a sports editor. Not hard to figure out why the sports editor went looking elsewhere.

Guess the high school coverage didn't produce enough clicks ... that's what drives McClatchy's editorial decision making process now ...

I might take a bit of the credit for McClatchy cutting back on staff over there. I'm teh sports editor at a competing biweekly and I broke a couple of local stories that they couldn't get evene when they had a four-man staff.

Do they still have the hockey team called the Macon Whoopie?

Not sure, but they just got a minor league baseball team: The Macon Bacon.

The Whoopee are LONG gone, but they're getting an indoor football team called the Georgia Doom, whose logo is a blatant ripoff of the computer game.

At one point the hockey team was the Macon Traxx.

I spoke with someone who said this position is still open and there’s no freeze.
