The Vicksburg Post, a 9,000-circulation, 7-day daily newspaper in Vicksburg, Mississippi, has an immediate opening for a sports reporter. Some news and general feature work will also be required, as well as pagination duties. Photography skills and pagination experience are strongly encouraged, but we will teach the right candidate.

High school sports are our bread and butter, but we also spread out on occasion to cover nearby Alcorn State University, Hinds Community College, and even some of the state colleges if a story warrants. Vicksburg has a strong sports tradition and, for a small community of about 50,000 people, has sent a lot of players on to college and the pros in a number of sports. New England Patriots cornerback Malcolm Butler, former NFL defensive lineman Michael Myers and Southern Miss football head coach Jay Hopson are just two of our local alumni, and all of them are potential stories.

As with any small town sports section, there's also the usual smattering of youth and recreational sports, mostly in the summer.

The candidate will be the No. 2 person in a two-person sports department. It's an entry level position, and pay will start accordingly.

We'd like to move quickly to fill this position as basketball season will be starting soon. Please send resume and clips to sports editor Ernest Bowker at ernest.bowker@vicksburgpost.com
