Free pass? She was shuttered away for two weeks. We discussed that column at length on this thread when it was published Oct. 5.

But yes, the leading lights of journalism who rushed at Newton were conspicuously silent on this portion.

Yeah, and everyone here defends her. Not me. She's racist.

I’m definitely not defending her either.

She was suspended two weeks. A certain segment of people will never look at her the same way again. We do not know yet how this will affect her ability to do her current job.

And we sure as hell have no way of knowing how this will affect her career as a whole, since it will always be "out there." Five years from now she may be up for some high-profile job somewhere, and someone will be reminded, "Ya know, this is the person who . . . " and she won't get said position.

WAY, WAY, WAY too early to claim someone got a "free pass."

The Observer did not handle this well ...

She should have been fired. The newspaper loses credibility by supporting her. By doing so, they are indirectly taking the position that they are OK with a little racism in their product. There's no middle ground here.

Anything she writes is subjected to being racist considering its author. It's the stigma that is now attached to her. You really don't need that explained to you, do you?

I’m curious as to where, in the phrase “The Panthers signed cornerback John Smith to their practice squad Tuesday,” there might be “a little racism.”

If she wrote it, it's there.
